South Africa is intensifying efforts to combat human trafficking, though it has yet to meet all minimum standards, as noted in the 2023 U.S. Trafficking in Persons report. Last year, an estimated 250,000 individuals fell victim to trafficking here. Recently, 90 undocumented Ethiopian nationals were rescued from inhumane conditions. Gyan Dwarika, Deputy Director of Child Exploitation at the National Department of Social Development, discussed the factors driving trafficking, including poverty and deceit, and the country's measures to address the issue and support victims.
