This morning, Department of Social Development social workers arrived at OR Tambo International Airport with the one-year-old who had been in the care of their mother. The mother and child were being held in a prison in Dakar, following the arrest of the mother in Senegal last year for drug trafficking. It is reported that within days of her incarceration, she gave birth to the child. Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu says the department will always put the best interests of the child first. However, they remain concerned about the issue of drugs and the harm they can cause children.
